Migrant Education Program

For your children, moving from harvest to harvest means changing schools and teachers, missing days at school, and feeling like they don’t belong. These changes can put your children at greater risk of doing poorly in school. Special services and help are available to migratory children to help overcome these problems to ensure a fair chance at education.

What is the Migrant Education Program?

The Migrant Education Program (MEP) provides extra support to migratory children for their education as required by federal law. The goal is to help migratory students succeed in school, to graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a High School Equivalency Diploma), and to develop skills so that they can find good jobs. It also helps schools respond to the influx of these mobile students.

We know that it is very important for parents to be involved in their children’s education. Parents are their child’s first teachers. The MEP is ready to support you in helping your child learn and grow. Your involvement will show your children how important learning is for life.

Is My Child Eligible for Services?

You and/or your child(ren) may be eligible to receive free educational or support services if;

• You have moved in the last three years (36 months) in order to seek work in agriculture or fishing.
• You and/ or your child(ren) are 0-21 years old.

Not all children are eligible to receive services, but it is important for you to call to find out more information. This call may help you and your children get the help they need to succeed in school.
