You Rock!
Congratulations to Midway Elementary fourth/fifth-grade teacher Robert Haensel. Mr. Haensel is the second recipient of the Moses Lake School District Golden “You Rock” Award for achieving and continuing to meet the district strategic goal of improving math-core instruction. Mr. Haensel is a leader in the use of our district’s new Ready Mathematics curriculum materials. His class’s current progress toward their annual typical growth has already exceeded 100%, with percentage growth at 118%.
Mr. Haensel uses a “self-identifying” system in his classroom where students can look ahead at their i-Ready lessons and identify which ones they predict they will need more support with. Students also identify what background knowledge they have for the upcoming lessons to determine what they already know. They then color coordinate their goals with either red which requires a daily check-in with Mr. Haensel, yellow which requires a weekly check-in, or green which places them in the “Fighting Hawk Land”!
The Moses Lake School District set two strategic goals this year, with one focusing on improving core math instruction across all grade levels. This work specifically targets closing the achievement gap in K-12 mathematics.
Mr. Haensel shared, “It helps me when students make goals that identify what they already know and what they will need more support in. It allows me and my classroom assistants to construct weekly lessons that best benefit the students. We also see students collaborating with each other more.”
