CHROMEBOOK & HOTSPOT EXCHANGE/REPAIR
The MLSD Tech department is open for Chromebook exchanges/repairs and hotspot pickup/exchanges by appointment only. Please call our Help Desk at (509) 766-2698 to make an appointment. You MUST have an appointment AND a help desk ticket number before you arrive at Technology.

Content Filtering

Are Chromebooks and Hotspot devices filtered? 

Yes, All Chromebooks have a CIPA approved filter when at school or away. Kajeet hotpots do have a limited CIPA filter installed. However, the AT&T hotspots are not filtered and users accept all liability for content accessed when connected to any hotspot device.

Can GoGuardian be used to filter and monitor content on student personal Chromebooks?

Yes, but only if the student logs into the Chromebook using their district Google account. If the student logs in using the guest or a personal Google account, Go Guardian will not be able to filter or monitor any content on the device. Even if the student logs into their district Google account in Chrome after logging into the Chromebook no filtering or monitoring will take place. Again, the student must sign in to the Chromebook using their district Google account.

Students are using the Chromebook inappropriately (searches), is there a filter?

Yes, there are 2 filters used by MLSD. Services called iboss, and GoGuardian.
 
 

General Use and Best Practices

Can students in the 1:1 pilot let their siblings use the Chromebook at home for school assignments?

It really is up to the parent/guardian. The Chromebook should be used for educational purposes only. So, a sibling using it for school assignments should not be an issue.
 

If a student loses a cord, can they buy a replacement online and turn that one in at the end of the year?

The original cord must be returned at the end of the school year. Students will be charged for the original one that was lost, stolen, or damaged.
 

Parent has a Chromebook for the student to use at school, can they use their own instead?

Only if they have an IEP that requires accommodation.
 

A student is moving from one school to another within the same school district, can they take the Chromebook with them to their new school?

No, the student must check in the Chromebook at the existing school and have a new Chromebook issued at the new school. 
 

What happens in the meantime while the student's Chromebook is being repaired if turned in?

If a student’s Chromebook is turned in for repair a loaner Chromebook will be issued to the student until the repair is completed and returned to the student. Loaner Chromebooks will be issued from each library.
 

Can the testing apps for NWEA/SBA be added to student's personal computers?

No, unfortunately, the Chromebook must be managed by MLSD in order to add any testing app.
