For Samantha, high school has been about discovering who she is, surrounding herself with the right people, and pursuing a passion that will shape her future.
A lifelong student in the Moses Lake School District, Samantha began her high school years in the traditional classroom before choosing a different path. After her sophomore year at Moses Lake High School, she enrolled full-time in the Running Start program through Big Bend Community College. Balancing college coursework, work, and staying connected to her high school community required discipline and independence.
“I kind of jumped off the cliff into Running Start,” she said with a laugh. “But it pushed me to be responsible and manage my time.”
Even while taking college classes, Samantha stayed connected to Moses Lake High through athletics and activities. Volleyball and softball played a big role in helping her find friendships and confidence. Through sports, she learned the importance of teamwork and leadership—and the value of surrounding yourself with people who truly want the best for you.
One class that made a lasting impact was sports medicine, where teacher Lily Rodriguez created a supportive environment that went beyond assignments and tests. “She actually cared about her students and built relationships with us,” Samantha shared. “You remember the teachers who take the time to know you.”
