Moses Lake High School Named One of Washington’s “Schools on the Rise”

Moses Lake High School has been honored as a 2025 “School on the Rise” by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) and the Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL), a statewide recognition highlighting schools that are making exceptional strides in culture, leadership, and student success.
This distinction celebrates the transformational work taking place at Moses Lake High School, where bold leadership, intentional systems, and student voice have shaped a school-wide shift toward inclusivity, belonging, and resilience.
“Moses Lake High School didn’t just change its mascot—it changed its future,” said Principal Sheila Kries. “We’ve worked hard to build a culture where every student belongs, every voice matters, and every day is a great day to be a MAV.”
The journey began in 2022 when the school transitioned from the “Chiefs” to the “Mavericks” mascot following a request from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. That change became a catalyst for broader cultural transformation—one led in partnership by students, staff, and administrators.
Key initiatives have included:
- The Culture & Climate Committee – a collaborative team of students and staff leading school-wide improvement efforts.
- Maverick Days – events focused on school spirit and unity.
- Maverick Ambassadors – peer mentors who welcome and support new students.
- Colors of the World – a student-led multicultural club celebrating diversity through art, food, and performance.
These programs, along with strong student representation in leadership and decision-making roles, have produced measurable outcomes: improved attendance, increased ASB involvement, stronger 9th-grade on-track rates, and a greater sense of student belonging.
Despite recent challenges—including a budget shortfall and two failed levy attempts in 2024—MLHS students and staff have rallied with grit and determination. The community stepped in to sustain student opportunities, and a successful levy in February 2025 brought renewed hope for the future.
The “Schools on the Rise” program celebrates schools across Washington that are building strong cultures, growing leadership capacity, and improving student outcomes. Moses Lake High School is one of just 42 schools recognized in 2025.
