A Heart for Community, A Commitment to Kids: Getting to Know Amy Breitenstein

If you ask Amy Breitenstein what drives her, the answer isn’t complicated.
It’s kids. It’s community. And it’s the belief that even small acts of service can make a lasting difference.
Elected to the Moses Lake School Board in November 2023, Breitenstein is currently serving her first term in Position 1. But her connection to the district runs much deeper than her time on the board.
This is home.
Rooted in Moses Lake
Breitenstein grew up in Moses Lake, and that lifelong connection shapes how she sees her role today.
“I love that I get to serve the same community that helped shape me,” she said. “There’s a lot of pride in the work that’s been done over the last couple of years—we have accomplished a lot.”
That pride isn’t just about progress—it’s personal. It reflects a commitment to giving back to a place that has long been part of her story.
Listening, Learning, and Showing Up
Outside of board service, Breitenstein works as a customer service representative for a local utility in Grant County—a role that mirrors one of the values she carries into every part of her life: listening.
“I believe in approaching each interaction ready to listen and learn,” she said. “That’s been a long lesson over the length of my career.”
It’s a mindset that translates naturally into board service, where understanding different perspectives—and working through them—matters.
The Moments That Shape Us
Like many in education, Breitenstein can point to a moment in school that stayed with her.
For her, it was a teacher who saw something in her she hadn’t fully seen in herself.
“I am forever in debt to Mrs. Armstrong, who nominated me to be a Natural Helper during my high school years,” she said.
It was a simple act—but one that reinforced the power of being seen, encouraged, and supported.
Life Beyond the Boardroom
When she’s not working or attending meetings, Breitenstein finds joy in the everyday rhythms of life.
Time with family. Working around the house and yard. A quiet date night with her husband.
And when she gets the chance, she leans into creativity—especially jewelry making and exploring new crafts she discovers online.
It’s a balance that keeps her grounded and connected outside of the responsibilities of public service.
Stepping Forward to Serve
Breitenstein’s decision to run for the school board came from a moment of reflection—and concern.
“At the time of my campaign, I was worried about the state of union,” she said. “I felt the best thing I could do was serve my community in a local position and start a new chapter in my life.”
That decision reflects something simple but powerful: when she saw a need, she chose to step forward.
What She Wants for Students
At the heart of everything Breitenstein does is a clear hope for students.
“I hope they feel noticed and safe,” she said.
It’s a short answer—but one that carries weight. Because feeling seen and supported is often where everything else begins.
Still Learning, Still Serving
Even in the face of difficult conversations, Breitenstein stays grounded in why the work matters.
“My heart is in it for the kids,” she said. “I hope the education they get here in Moses Lake is just the beginning of a bright and shiny future for each and every one of them.”
It’s a perspective rooted not in position—but in purpose.
And like so many who choose to serve, her impact isn’t just in the decisions she helps make—but in the care she brings to making them.
A Story That Might Surprise You
And if you think you know everything about your local school board members—Breitenstein might surprise you.
At one point in her life, she found herself sitting next to legendary daredevil Evel Knievel at a family wedding.
Just one more reminder that behind every title is a story—and often, a few unexpected chapters along the way.
