Serving with Purpose: Getting to Know Carla Urias

For Moses Lake School District board member Carla Urias, service begins with family.
A wife and mother of six, Urias says her faith, family, and a desire to give back to her community have shaped the person she is today. As a stay-at-home mom and homemaker, she values the opportunity to serve others and help strengthen the community she calls home.
“I love the sunsets, the people, and the sense of community here,” Urias said. “Moses Lake still has that small-town feel, but it also offers so many opportunities for families.”
Urias was first elected to the Moses Lake School Board in 2023 and last year served as the board’s vice-chair. Her decision to seek board service came after witnessing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on students and families.
“I saw the effect that COVID had on kids,” she said. “It opened my eyes to the need to take a stand and get involved. I prayed about it, felt led to learn more, and the rest is history.”
Her commitment to serving students is rooted in her belief that every child deserves to feel valued and supported when they walk through the schoolhouse doors. “I want students to feel appreciated and cared for,” Urias said. “I want them to know they can reach for the stars. I also want our teachers to truly appreciate every student.”
Like many people, Urias can point to a teacher who helped shape her own educational journey. She credits her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Rice, with helping her recognize her potential. “She opened my eyes to learning and what I was capable of,” she said. “She gave me confidence.”
Outside of board meetings and district business, Urias finds her greatest joy at home with her family. Her idea of a perfect day is simple: sharing dinner around the table and hearing about everyone’s day.
Those moments reflect the values that continue to guide her today. Faith. Family. Continuous learning. And making the most of each day.
“My relationship with Christ and wanting to be the best wife and mom I can be are what shape me,” Urias said. “I believe in continuous growth, learning new things, and making the most of every day.”
Even when board discussions become difficult, Urias says her focus remains on the district’s students. “The kids keep my heart in this work,” she said. “They deserve the best, and they deserve people who are willing to stand up for them and make the right choices for our community.”
One fact that may surprise community members? Urias says she is related to Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States.
For Urias, however, her legacy is less about family history and more about ensuring today’s students have the support, encouragement, and opportunities they need to succeed.
