Kindergarten & 1st Grade Instructional Hours FAQ

Kindergarten & 1st Grade Instructional Hours FAQ

  • Yes

  • Students will be marked absent or tardy as appropriate.

  • The district must meet state minimum instructional hours. The District currently meets all of the instructional hour requirements for every grade except Kindergarten. This adjustment allows us to address the instructional minutes shortfall within the current school year rather than adding days to the end of the year for Kindergarten students. An overwhelming response from parents indicated that they prefer this solution for instructional hours.

  • Parents of current first-grade students have expressed that some of those who were unable to send their children to the kinder camp last year due to other commitments and would like their children to have an opportunity to engage in the additional instructional time this school year.

  • The new schedule will begin on Monday, February 23.

    Monday: Arrival by 10:05 a.m.
    Tuesday–Friday: Arrival by 9:05 a.m.

All students riding district transportation will arrive at 9:05 am.

Students in grades 2-5 not riding district transportation may arrive at 9:05 am, but are not required to arrive until 9:30 am

  • Washington State defines instructional time as time students are provided the opportunity to engage in educational activity planned by and under the direction of school district staff. This includes class time, intermissions for class changes, recess, and scheduled teacher-parent conferences, but excludes meal times when instruction is not happening.

  • All students will be supervised. K/1 students will be engaged in developmentally appropriate instructional activities during this time, as defined above.

  • Paraeducators will lead the activities for K/1 students. Prior to recent budget reductions, students had a comparable portion of the school day that was guided and supervised by paraeducators. This plan restores a similar structure within the school day.

  • Kindergarten & Grade 1: Attendance will be taken by paraeducators at the arrival time. Teachers will enter attendance into Skyward when students get into the classroom. A student will be considered tardy if they did not attend during the early arrival time but arrive at 9:30/10:30. Teachers will be provided with any tardies or absences taken by paraeducators, and the teacher will record it accordingly.

Grades 2–5: Attendance will be taken by teachers once students enter their classrooms at the regular start time (9:30 or 10:30).

  • NEW BUS SCHEDULES are posted online that reflect the adjusted pickup and arrival times.

  • Family feedback strongly indicated a preference to adjust daily schedules rather than add days to the end of the year. This plan reflects that input.

  • All students will have access to breakfast when they arrive at school. It will be served in the place it normally is.
