Learning in Action | Longview Elementary
Strong reading skills start early—and at Longview Elementary, students are building them step by step.
In Mrs. Murray’s kindergarten class, students are learning how to break words into sounds and connect those sounds to individual letters. From there, they practice blending letters together to read whole words. Using a fun “fan focus” technique, students turn their imaginary binoculars to the screen and chorally blend the word “gas” together—building confidence, focus, and early reading success.
In Mrs. Goodrich’s first-grade class, students are taking those blending skills even further. While the letter Z makes the first sound in zebra, students are also learning that Z can sometimes make an S sound. The class explores an important question: Where would Z make an S sound? Through discussion and practice, students deepen their phonics knowledge and grow as flexible, thoughtful readers.
From kindergarten to first grade, reading instruction at Longview is intentional, engaging, and rooted in building strong foundations that last a lifetime.
