K-2: Mathematics

Children work at a table, writing on papers.

From Play to Proficiency in K-2:

Mathematics

Kindergarten students build number sense by counting, reading, and writing numbers, understanding that each object is counted once, and using hands-on activities to explore simple addition and subtraction.

First graders develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 20, solve word problems, and begin to understand place value by recognizing tens and ones in two-digit numbers.

Second graders extend their understanding of place value to hundreds, tens, and ones, solve multi-step problems, and add and subtract fluently within 100 using mental strategies and number patterns.
